A random act of kindness
When I was in Barbados I spotted an article in the local newspaper.
The capital city of Bridgetown is a bustling place with a terrifying one way traffic system. ( we chose not to drive which I think was wise). According to the article a young woman spotted a friend at the other side of the road and – without checking the traffic – dashed over to meet her. She did not notice the motorcyclist heading for her or that she( the motorcyclist was also a woman) had managed to swerve to avoid her. The motorcyclist, overcome by shock, sat for a moment or two to gather herself when a lady passing by came up to her, asked her if she was OK – and gave her a hug!
Now I can’t imagine that happening in many of the big cities here. Giving out hugs to strangers has all sorts of potential for misunderstandings – which is such a pity.
I found the story of that act of kindness both very touching and heartwarming.

My mother and my wife’s mother are both from Barbados. The last time we went there we were stuck in town in the rush hour and yes it is a nightmare for traffic!! Absolute nightmare.
One of the things I loved about Barbados is how friendly people are. I have had no hugs yet from strangers…watch this space…but I think that kind of comaraderie and friendliness in smaller towns that gets missed in the bigger towns, and it’s such a shame.
