Recognising when it is OK to blow your own trumpet!
Filed Under Leadership, Personal development, Coaching, Career development, Personal awareness, Positive view
I realise that it might appear that there have been a disproportionate number of blog entries about golf from me over the past few weeks. This is however part of a plan for me and my development wider than the game itself.
As a coach I know that when a client recognises what they want to do and has a clear idea of their current situation they can make choices and take steps to reach their goal.
My goal is to play golf to a standard that means that I can play with others without having a negative impact on their game.
Now to be fair everyone I have played with so far has been hugely supportive and encouraging. Maybe all golfers are like that - I don’t know.
But what I have done is focused on what I know I am good at and I am working on refining that. So I took a lesson a couple of weeks ago because my driving was OK - and he showed me how it might be better. I tried out the new technique yesterday and indeed it was so much better that I won my first ever golf prize - the nearest the hole prize!!!
Now after reflecting on my game yesterday I know what to concentrate on next - more of the good stuff and working round the edges of the other million and one other things you need to do. I am eating that elephant in small chunks.
In an interview last week it was important to tell the interviewer about my talent for numbers. This is not one that I have used much recently but I got good exam passes in accounting and economics and I told her that I knew that I was “blowing my own trumpet” but we both agreed that it was a good time to do so.
I am proud of myself - and that’s OK.

Just be sure to chew those bites of elephant real well Jackie. Golf is a tough game - more power to you in meeting your goal. And congratulations on your prize!!!
You have reason to be proud. Trumpets away!
Thanks Bob. I appreciate your encouraging comments!
…and chewing the elephant bites well…I like that.
