Some more on having the right attitude

This morning I spent some time at a hospital clinic with my daughter. The way that the appointment systems work means that there is quite a bit of sitting around between seeing the specialists and I had time to do what I do best – people watch – or as I like to call it “observing”.

My attention was drawn to a lady who greeted each patient she met with a loud “Good morning , Mr…, how are you this morning”

Automatically the patient responded and perked up. Everybody likes to think that they are special and important and she knows that.

Between patients she scurried around busily, sometimes singing to herself. My daughter had met her – she said “That lady is lovely”.I have written before about positive psychology using the “How full is your bucket” as my  reference and she topped up everyone’s bucket she met this morning.

Do you think anyone has told her? The reason I ask is that I am still reading “First Break All the Rules” by Marcus Buckingham and got to the bit where he is writing about managers who focus all their attention on “deficiencies” and forget  ( or don’t recognise the value  )of acknowledging and encouraging people to keep doing what they really do well.

I have no idea what else that lady has to do on a daily basis. All that I know is that as a first point of contact she is a ray of sunshine!
