Managers learning from Buddhism

In People Management, the magazine for HR professionals I read a report on a presentation by  a Buddhist Abbott at a recent conference.( follow the link below for the full article)

I really liked his story about building a wall.

He was talking about a monastery wall he built  which he says had two  ”bad ” bricks sticking out at an angle which embarrassed him until a visitor pointed out that all of  the other bricks were good and his point is to put “deficiencies” into context and focus on the successes and what went right.

Then on the very next page I read about work going on in Hammersmith Hospitals using appreciative enquiry ( AI)  where people are encouraged to talk about the positives and what works and build on those.

It seems like such common sense – start with the good stuff and build on that. I encourage my clients to do the same and if they have not done it before initially I might  get a cynical response but this goes when the benefits become clearer!
