What do you think? Great idea? Or are you doubtful.

OK, I am playing with you here. I know this works. I have been involved  as a coach with Space Unlimited for about 3 years now . The young people I have worked with have risen to any challenge set. Their ideas have been great - and why?

Well in the words of one young lady in this artice in the Herald today when supporting a colleague who said that young people have better ideas than adults

“It’s because we’ve got bigger imaginations

I don’t want to argue with her on that one but maybe I could add that adults could have great ideas too - if they though like young people, without constraints, or politics, or looking foolish, or making a point - or whatever …

Just a thought.

  1. Jackie, along with their bigger imaginations, young people are more willing to take bigger risks too. In a sense they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Often adults decisions are guided by mortgage payments or other things that anchor them.

    What do you think?

  2. Young people do have loads of ideas…but an idea is nothing without follow through!

  3. Robyn - there are all sorts of things that don’t have to be taken into account if you don’t have to consider the consequences so I agree. The project though is about balance - the young people sharing ideas with the adults who can make the decisions/modifications required. Then hopefully when the young people become the adults they can remember what they learned and apply it in a more sophisticated but no less imaginative way? The project is only a few years old. It will be interesting to hear stories from years to come.

  4. Thanks for the comment David. What we are doing in the period of the project is allowing the young people to go off into “unlimited space” with their ideas and - in the time available - develop them somewhat so that they can present their ideas and findings back to the client. Hopefully will give them a real live experience of working through ideas to action that they will want to replicate.
The idea of younger and older people collaborating is really appealing to me for the reason you point out. Though I do know adults who are great ideas people but have the same problem!
