I received and invitation to an alumni event from a previous employer in the mail yesterday. My husband attended a similar event some time ago. There seems to be a growth in alumni type events  so I was interested to read this article in the Harvard Business Review . As I understand it the research shows that people who have previously worked together and still get together after one has left the organisation will talk about the work they have gone on to do. On the face of it it might seem like “leaking” information to a competitor but it may also lead to collaborative work which benefits all parties.

I know that when I moved from one employer to another in a similar sector as the offering of each was not the same I was able to make introductions which allowed for some joined up services.  When I moved within on organisation I was able to incorporate knowledge brought with me to broaden the range of support we could give clients using specialists in each department.

I realise that the article in the HBR specifically deals with inventors and patents but I feel sure this would also apply to ideas.

On another note  - in the same edition - there is an article about bosses and their ability to listen to their “subordinates”. By taking the advice in this some oganisations might not lose the employees in the first place!

  1. Hi Jackie,

Have been reading your blog since we met at the Morton Fraser evening a few weeks ago. We’ve just started our own blog at Gravitate. Wonder if you know of many other HR blogs based in the UK - there seem to be a lot in the US…?!
