This might seem like a random couple of questions but I have been thinking about singing a lot today which is a direct result of having a wonderful evening at the Showcase show last night. The members of Showcase put on a show each year to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Care. The performers were excellent. They all have day jobs and do this as a hobby. Now everybody knows that it is hard to stick at something if you don’t enjoy it and looking at the faces of the cast last night it is clear to see that they love taking part.

I took my parents along with me. Mum had cancer treatment several years ago and had a Macmillan nurse assigned to her. She was great so we know the value of the work they do.

Dad has a great voice and I have lots of memories of him singing - usually when he had a few drinks I have to say but not in a boozy way. Mum was always humming tunes round the house. I love to sing along to the radio - even todays “modern” stuff and the odd aria  - though not knowing the words has never stopped me.

The children at Forthview Primary School have song time every week and sometimes sing at assemblies. When I had only been there a few days I sat in on an assembly and watched their faces as they sang their favourite songs. They were loving it.

Everybody sings sometime don’t they? I don’t know if it is possible to sing if you are very unhappy but I think it is unlikely. Singing is a joyous activity isn’t it?

Think about the last time you sang. …and please tell me what you were singing and how you felt at the time.

Today Radio 1 is celebrating 40 years of being on the air. I have found myself singing along to so many of the songs. Including “Especially for You” by Kylie and Jason which takes me back to when the kids were little and we sang it together and “Hey Jude” by the Beatles which has one of the most memorable choruses …and you can’t forget the words so singing along is easy ( think about it).

La la la lalala la….

  1. I just found your website today and have really enjoyed reading your posts. I wasn’t going to coment until I saw this post.

I found myself singing all day on Sunday, I was just happy. I was with a friend doing a boring job that needed doing, just being with my friend made the job easier and brightened by day.
It was great to feel that happy, singing along to the radio spending time with a friend.
Thank you for making me realise just how happy it made me feel. I am off to sing now. :)
