I met with my coach this morning.  I was having a “can’t see the wood for the trees” moment and knew that it was time to get some professional input. Apart from  working through my issue and planning the way forward I get the benefit of observing and recognising another coach’s style.

In my coaching I use  the GROW model developed by Sir John Whitmore which starts with setting a goal, exploring the current reality, considering the options and checking the will to take action. I practice the coaching session may start somewhere other than G and sometimes all 4 areas will not be covered but as a loose framework it works for me  and my clients. Today I started with the current reality and worked backwards towards the goal..I feel good about the way forward.

When teaching coaching skills I met with someone who said that the didn’t want to “bear their all to anyone” and that they could not see the value as they did not have any “big issues”. As the day progressed we enjoyed a cup of coffee together and they shared some ideas they had about their future - about which they were clearly very excited.  I asked them how they were making decisions about this and they laughed because right at that point they saw how coaching could be valuable to them. They spent the rest of the training exploring great ideas relating to their future plans.

Coaching is not only useful for putting things right or as a “remedial”  - it can be just as valuable as an aid to decision making.

I love it when light bulbs go on!
