What is coaching?

So what exactly is coaching? During a regular session with 2 other coaches which we use to  share good practice and continue to develop our coaching skills  I asked them what they say when asked.

John gives this simple example. He asks the person if they have a dream. ( or goal )Then he asks if  they can identify just one step they can take to work towards that goal. Finally he asks when they will do that one thing….in a very simple example he has given the person a taste of coaching.

Gill gave a sporting example. Most people are aware of Tiger Wood’s extraordinary golfing talent. Of course sometimes his form seems to desert him. (This year of course he lost his Dad and obviously this had a major impact on his whole life – not just his golf). But for him – and many other sportsmen – his attitude will make a huge difference to how they play. Coaching helps you understanding what is going on inside.

I am also asked if there is a difference between coaching and counselling. I know a few counsellors and have discussed this with them to get their views. For me the main difference is that coaching is a “looking forward” exercise  although of course some reflection is required to establish the current situation. Counselling usually looks at the past in some detail.

So hopefully that makes it a bit clearer. Let me know if you have another explanation that works for you.
