Applying for your own job?
Today I heard of someone who has had to “apply for their own job”. I understand there is a business restructuring where some jobs have gone and some are being “reworked”.
But this got me thinking. I understand that when a job is redundant previous performance by the individual – whether good or bad - does not impact on that decision. (When it happened to my job that helped – but I couldn’t get away from the fact that no matter how it was dressed up I was being rejected.) But applying for your own job seems is a strange concept. If up to that point the person’s performance has been good, targets set and met and overall positive for both employee and employer how will it feel to be doing that job one day well and the next competing against someone else to continue to do it? I just don’t get it. Even if the candidate is successful in keeping their job surely the relationship with the employer is damaged?
I am sure I am being too simplistic and judgement in my views here and would love to hear stories about situations where this has worked well.
My client was unsuccessful in getting the job they went for. But by going through the process – including our coaching session - they were much more aware of what they had to offer and they have decided to go out into the market with renewed ambition and enthusiasm!
